How Sodium Bicarbonate is Used in Cancer Treatment

There are many ways in which people believe they can treat cancer. Some are successful in their attempts and others are not so lucky. Sodium bicarbonate, otherwise known as baking soda, has been commonly used in cancer treatment.

Over the years, oncologists have encouraged the use of sodium bicarbonate while administering anticarcinogenic agents during chemotherapy.

A History Lesson

Dr. Tullio Simoncini, an Italian oncologist who is responsible for promoting the use of sodium bicarbonate as an alternative treatment to cancer. His theory is that cancer can be caused by yeast infection.

 

In relation to his belief sodium bicarbonate has the ability to kill yeast. Dr. Simoncini has since published his research thesis, “Cancer is Fungus,” offering fungal infection as the leading cause of cancer.

This being said, there is no scientific proof that a yeast infection can ultimately cause cancer, or that sodium bicarbonate can directly cure cancers. This is in correlation to multiple studies that have been completed, which suggests sodium carbonate influences the pH level of cancer cells.

How is this Significant to You?

Sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, can actually change the pH level of tumor cells. It’s a mainstream treatment for acidosis. Oncologists use this to neutralize the acid properties of cancer agents during chemotherapy.

Many cancer centers across the United States including the Arizona Cancer Center of the University of Arizona, the Department of Pharmacology of Wayne State University in Michigan, and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Florida are carrying out studies that indicate the ability of sodium bicarbonate to change the pH of tumor cells, which could prevent its spread and progression.

Cancer cells are unable to survive in an alkaline environment. The acidic environment of the tumor cells is the reason they thrive and spread. The alkaline tumor cells increase the ability of other anti-carcinogenic drugs to be more effective in preventing tumor activities.

Tumors are known to be more acidic than normal cells and tissues. Acidic environments are low in oxygen, and the change in the pH to alkaline increases oxygen supply to the cell. This results in the abnormal function of the tumor and prevents it from metastasizing.

Sodium bicarbonate doesn’t allow cancer cell growth by altering their pH level. Although some chemotherapy agents are highly acidic, which can be dangerous to patients, oncologists use sodium bicarbonate to diminish the acid property in anti-carcinogen agents.

It also brings alkalinity to the environment of the tumor cells. Cancer cells cannot survive in places with high oxygen levels; the alkaline environment prevents growth and spreading.

Things to Consider

There may not be substantial evidence to support that sodium bicarbonate directly treats cancer, but research conducted on animals suggests some therapeutic benefits from its use.

Use of sodium bicarbonate under close doctor supervision is safe. However, there are other risks associated in regards to patients with heart disease, which may result in organ damage when taken without a proper prescription.
